7 Cool Tips To Reinvent Yourself – Colin Slater
You have to leave the city of your comfort and go to the wilderness of your intuition. You can’t get there by bus only by hard work and risk and by not knowing what you are doing however what you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover will be yourself ~ Alan Alder
Purpose of this e-book:
What you think is an orderly structured life can be turned upside down and inside out by one of life’s sudden twist and turns. Reinventing ourselves in this age of rapid change is a necessary skill to learn and an essential strategy to have. Governments change, technologies come and go in fact one of the few constants in or lives is change.
Over the course of my life I’ve had to reinvent myself several times because circumstances change, often beyond our control. Jobs and companies can disappear in a short time frame e.g. Toyota, Holden and Alinta. They can also appear just as quickly so you need to be ready to make use of new opportunities. Having been through the heartache and gut wrenching experience several times now I want to pass these tips onto others so they do not have to make the same mistakes or go through the same stresses. Having a blue print to guide you through this challenging experience is a valuable resource.
It is a worthwhile strategy to have a game plan when reinventing yourself. Why do this?
Changing your perception of yourself or creating a new version of yourself is challenging and it is important to have compelling reasons to do so. Parts of you will resist the change until the emotional benefits outweigh the pain of staying as you are.
Here’s a quick overview of the 7 tips to Reinvent Yourself
- Mindset and self-talk
- Beliefs and values
- Taking responsibility 100% for your results
- Smart goals
- Take massive action
Focus: What you focus on is what you get.
Our thoughts create our reality- where we put our focus is the direction we tend to go ~ Peter McWilliams
Before I begin with the tips because it can be a stressful time whilst you reinvent yourself for whatever reason has occurred in your life, please look after yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. Surround yourself with a supportive team and get medical advice if you need it from your doctor.
We have a specific part of the brain called the reticular activating system (RAS) where we filter and find evidence to support what we want to create or attract into our lives. This process aligns with our beliefs and values so you can now see how important your values and beliefs are in bringing your desired goals to reality. If you have a belief or value that no longer serves you then it is time to change it. E.g. If you believe you are not worthy of success and have a low self-esteem, then you are going to find it difficult to reinvent yourself down the path of success until you reframe that belief to a more positive one. Conversely if you have a belief of high self-worth and affirm that, success will come your way as you work hard to make it happen and your belief will eventually be realised.
Focusing on what you do not want will only bring you more of the same. Stop doing this now.
The vision of what you want to create is so important. Get very specific when you describe it down to colour, size weight, texture, sound, how you feel about it and what you are telling yourself about it.
Begin with the end in mind ~ Stephen Covey
Focus on how you want your future self to be and then work back till now. Unless you know your destination or outcome how can you possibly work out how you are going to get there or if you have arrived even. Getting specific about who and what you want to reinvent yourself as is important.
Mindset and self- talk
The only thing that stands between a person and what they want in life is the will to try it, persist and the belief that it is possible¬ Rich Devos
What you think about determines your emotions, beliefs, actions and your results in that order. Keep them positive and affirming yourself as this reinforces your beliefs and your results. This is important because your subconscious mind is watching and listening to your every move.
Negative self-talk limits your actions and results so be vigilant about these and flip them to positive self-talk reminding yourself of the outcome you want to realise.
Reinventing Yourself often involves breaking away from old habits and patterns that no longer serve us and this can be extremely uncomfortable as you move into unfamiliar territory. You may have to learn new skills and you may have to break away from old social circles so you can create a new fresh self or persona. You’ll find resistance to these changes as your lizard brain tries to keep you safe and stay as you are.
Knowing who you are and what your strengths, skills, weaknesses and passions are can be very useful to work out options for what you are about decide which directions to go next.
It may mean taking on a casual job until a more permanent one present itself or you work out what you really want.
Surround yourself with images of what you want to become and do. Some people call this a vision board to help you work out and create your future self.
Write about your goals in a journal so your thoughts and aspirations become more clear to you.
Write down at least three reason why you want and need this reinvention for yourself on an index card and carry it around with you to remind you of your desired outcome. Examine your skill set and experience looking for those that have the most meaning and purpose for you. You know in your heart that they light you up and hold your attention. Pay attention to your heart’s messages as they are valuable insights.
Beliefs and Values
Your beliefs become your thoughts
Your thoughts become your words
Your words become your actions
Your actions become your habits
Your habits become your values
Your Values become your destiny ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Beliefs and values greatly influence all the choices you make and will make over the course of your life. A majority if not all our decisions are based on emotions backed by our beliefs and values wherever we have collected then from or been exposed to them, often from our parents, carers or significant people in our lives, like teachers, coaches and ministers.
When a belief or value no longer serves us, it is possible to change it or reframe it to make it more applicable, or more resourceful now you’re an adult with choices. As a child, you were dependant on others to make decisions for you. Now as an adult you have a choice what values and beliefs to keep or let go of. Now is the time to focus on your future self and how you want it to be.
For example, if you believe success can be yours whatever that means and you are worthy of whatever you create to offer others then you will succeed at whatever you choose to do as you reinvent yourself. If you believe life is difficult and finding a solution will be hard for some reason can be reframed to believing there is always a solution if you are prepared to look for it. www.yourcoachingsolutions.com.au
Begin each day, task or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination. Continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen. Taking responsibility 100% for your results
I am not a product of my circumstances.
I am a product of my decisions ~ Stephen Covey
It’s very easy to say and believe our results are influenced by others around us however as soon as we take responsibility for them then the onus is on us and we will more likely look for solutions.
Yes, events do occur around us however our choice and this is important is how we choose to respond to it and that is empowering.
If it is to be it is up to me reinforces this. We do have to hold ourselves accountable for our results. If we do this then It brings about a shift in our mind set as discussed earlier and starts with our thoughts. We do have control over those and we can change them if they no longer serve us, fortunately. Our choices affect our results and let’s face it, life is a series of choices.
Effort and courage are not enough without
Purpose and direction ~ John F Kennedy
Having a specific goal or an outcome gives you more chance of achieving it in a timely manner. Let me explain this. It is unlikely you’ll start a journey without a destination in mind because you’ll end up anywhere without one.
SMART goals I have found this approach invaluable to achieving goals or outcomes.
S: Specific in as much detail as possible. Who, what, when, where, how and why. Your why is particularly important here as it is your driver to follow through to completion.
M: Measurable. What gets measured gets done. It gives you an opportunity to know when you have achieved your goal. It also gives you an opportunity to picture what it is, the goal that is and what it looks like.
A: Attainable or achievable. Is it realistic?
Relevant: How does it fit in and contribute to my life right now?
Time bound: When will you achieve your goal? What’s your deadline?
Example: I want to reach a target weight of 62 kg from 70kg in 8 weeks, be healthy, fit into my best clothes so I look good, feel good and can tell myself I’m beautiful in the mirror.
Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit ~ Napoleon Hill
It is easy to get disheartened when you are going through reinventing yourself. It can be very stressful and it is important to look after yourself physically , mentally and spiritually.
Feedback occurs when we take action towards our goals and examine the results. It can be bad or good and what’s important is how we view it. We all make mistakes and it is part of the learning and improvement process. The trick is to not take it personally because if we do the fear of failure can really hold us back. Feedback is how we improve performance or product value. Failing fast is how a lot of entrepreneurs succeed in a rapidly changing environment in order to come up with successful products or services. If you can create a more valuable better version of yourself then you are more valuable to an employer or you can offer more value to your clients.
Take Massive action
Massive thoughts must be followed by massive actions. There is nothing ordinary about the 10x rule. It simply is what it says it is: 10x the thoughts and 10x the actions of other people ~ Grant Cardone
This step is important because even if you focus on what you want, know why you want it and have smart goals, if you do not follow up with massive action then you will not achieve your goals.
As you move towards your goal or outcome guess what happens? You pick up momentum and those goals get meanings attached to them by you as they get nearer. They become more real and you have more belief in yourself that you are enough and that you can succeed. Continue working towards completing your goal and when you do reach it, celebrate loudly and reward yourself.
If you get stuck or stalled go back to your reasons why you are doing it. Are they compelling enough? If not change them until they do.
